چکیده

Most research on cyclist safety is focused on bicycle motor vehicle crashes. Only a few studies address single-bicycle crashes (i.e. a fall or obstacle collision), in spite of the fact that most cyclists admitted to hospitals are single-bicycle crash victims. This study developed a categorization of single-bicycle crash types. A draft categorization was developed based on the scarce literature that is available and theory on bicycle dynamics. This categorization was tested using a questionnaire study that was conducted among bicycle crash victims treated at an Emergency Care Department. The questionnaire contained open questions about the crash and closed questions on possible direct causes, crash characteristics, and circumstances. The results indicate that about half of all single-bicycle crashes are related to infrastructure: the cyclist rode off the road (I), or collided with an obstacle (II), the bicycle skidded due to a slippery road surface (III), or the rider was unable to stabilize the bicycle or stay on the bike because of an uneven road surface (IV). The first two categories happen due to the cyclist taking the wrong route, while the last two happen under more direct influence of the road surface conditions. Other types are loss of control at low speed (V), forces on the front wheel (VI), or poor or risky riding behaviour (VII). Bicycle defects (VIII) contribute to a small group of crashes. The study provides per crash type statistics on victims and circumstances.

What do cyclists need to see to avoid single-bicycle crashes?

The number of single-bicycle crash victims is substantial in countries with high levels of cycling. To study the role of visual characteristics of the infrastructure, such as pavement markings, in single-bicycle crashes, a study in two steps was conducted. In Study 1, a questionnaire study was conducted among bicycle crash victims (n = 734). Logistic regression was used to study the relationshi...

Characteristics of cyclist crashes in Italy using latent class analysis and association rule mining

The factors associated with severity of the bicycle crashes may differ across different bicycle crash patterns. Therefore, it is important to identify distinct bicycle crash patterns with homogeneous attributes. The current study aimed at identifying subgroups of bicycle crashes in Italy and analyzing separately the different bicycle crash types. The present study focused on bicycle crashes tha...

Database improvements for motor vehicle/bicycle crash analysis

BACKGROUND Bicycling is healthy but needs to be safer for more to bike. Police crash templates are designed for reporting crashes between motor vehicles, but not between vehicles/bicycles. If written/drawn bicycle-crash-scene details exist, these are not entered into spreadsheets. OBJECTIVE To assess which bicycle-crash-scene data might be added to spreadsheets for analysis. METHODS Police ...

Macro-level pedestrian and bicycle crash analysis: Incorporating spatial spillover effects in dual state count models.

This study attempts to explore the viability of dual-state models (i.e., zero-inflated and hurdle models) for traffic analysis zones (TAZs) based pedestrian and bicycle crash frequency analysis. Additionally, spatial spillover effects are explored in the models by employing exogenous variables from neighboring zones. The dual-state models such as zero-inflated negative binomial and hurdle negat...

Mapping Bicycle Crash Risk Patterns on the Local Scale

Currently, mainly aggregated statistics are used for bicycle crash risk calculations. Thus, the understanding of spatial patterns at local scale levels remains vague. Using an agent-based flow model and a bicycle crash database covering 10 continuous years of observation allows us to calculate and map the crash risk on various spatial scales for the city of Salzburg (Austria). In doing so, we d...
